Theoretical Division

The Theoretical Division carries out advanced theoretical research activities in the various sectors of physics with particular reference to the field of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, theory of relativity, astrophysics and cosmology and foundations of physics.

Main activities

The Division performs diversified short and middle-long term activities in a wide range of theoretical physics fields including but not limited to:

  • Foundations of Physics: study about conceptual bases of the fundamental theories of physics and cosmology, to their logical, methodological, and philosophical assumptions, the meaning of time and space, fundamental metrology, interpretations of quantum mechanics, foundations and meaning of relativity, time arrow, unified field theory, theory of everything
  • Non-linear physics: advanced techniques in non-linear physics, complex systems and chaos, physics of solitons, non-linear computational physics
  • Theoretical Acoustics: advanced signal processing, speech processing algorithms, acoustic problem in information science, non-linear acoustic, photo-acoustic, holographic acoustics, underwater acoustic, quantum acoustics, ultrasonic physics
  • Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory: foundation of Quantum Mechanics, study of Quantum Vacuum dynamics, open quantum systems dynamics, development of a Coherent Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Field Theory of Tachyons, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Optics and Photonics; Quantum Statistical Physics
  • Theory of Relativity: generalization of special and general theory of relativity in the space-like region, study of the relativity postulates, neutrino physics, Quantum Field Theory in curved space-time, Faster-than-light phenomena
  • Condensed matter physics: advanced models of superconductivity
  • Quantum computation and Quantum Information: advanced models of hypercomputation, development of photonic quantum algorithms, quantum information through coherent quantum systems, quantum cryptography, quantum teleporting, relativistic quantum information theory
  • Astrophysics and Cosmology: formulation of alternative cosmology models, theoretical astrophysics, Quantum Cosmology, Quantum Plasma Physics, Relativistic Astrophysics, Dark Energy and Dark Matter models
  • Environmental physics: modeling of pollutants generations and diffusion in complex scenarios
  • Computer Science: open questions in theory of computation, advanced methods in artificial intelligence, techniques and algorithms in artificial intelligence, cognitive science and related topics
